EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

HOW FIT DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO TRAIN KUNG FU?

I can cater for all levels of fitness and physiques. Kung Fu is a very rich and diverse martial art, and encompasses something for everyone. There is no pressure to be as fit or as flexible as your classmates, and everyone has to start somewhere. However, you will notice your strength & fitness improve sooner than you might think!

WHAT DOES A STANDARD CLASS INVOLVE?

A normal class will usually include stretching & warm ups, fitness drills, practicing the basic Choy Li Fut techniques (some on punchbags), and forms practice. We may also cover light sparring and applications of techniques.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET TO BLACK BELT?

There is no quick answer for that! It takes as long as it takes and depends on the person's natural abilities and commitment to training, in terms of class attendance and effort. A black belt should not be seen as an end goal, but simply a foundation on which to build. See our full grading syllabus here. There are 8 grades below black belt, and gradings will be held roughly every 3 months with GM Niel Willcott.

WHAT ACCREDITATION DO YOU HAVE?

I have passed my first and second level black sash testings under Grandmaster Niel Willcott of Lohan Martial Arts. I am fully insured and emergency first aid trained.

DO I NEED TO SIGN UP FOR MEMBERSHIP?

Before you commence training, you will need to fill in a PARQ form to confirm any pre-existing medical conditions. Classes can be paid for weekly, or monthly with a discount.

In order to be eligible to grade, you will need to purchase membership with our association, Lohan Martial Arts. Please follow this link.

DO I NEED A UNIFORM?

For your first few lessons, you can wear comfortable clothing (t-shirt, tracksuit bottoms etc). The standard uniform for our club is a dark green Lohan t-shirt for beginners with dark trousers, and black t-shirts for advanced students. You can wear clean trainers or go barefoot (bear in mind the studio floor is wooden). If you want to order a Lohan Martial Arts top (£10), please contact me.

WHAT IS THE ETIQUETTE?

  • You bow by making a fist with the right hand and palm with the left hand, bring them together in front of your face, then bow from the waist.

  • Bow on entering and leaving the Kwoon (training studio).

  • We do 3 bows at the start and end of every class, to honour the past masters, present master and each other as future masters.

  • Generally, if bowing to a higher grade, you will bow lower than they do.

  • Bow to your partner before and after any pair work or sparring.

  • Bow to your instructor/senior students, after receiving correction or instruction.

  • Always be courteous to your instructor and fellow students - leave your ego at the door!

IS THERE A WELCOME PACK?

Yes - it contains details of training times, class costs, membership & uniform details, history of Choy Li Fut & a copy of the grading syllabus. It also has the PAR-Q which will need to be completed prior to training.
